Building energy-efficient networks and making our offices greener
Innovative products cut energy use up to 80%, to shrink our carbon footprint
Our customers, the telecom service providers, can spend up to 80% of energy costs on powering network equipment. To help customers reduce expenses and meet their environmental goals, we take steps to make our products green:
- Value sustainable design. Tellabs engineers participate in global Design for Environment workshops to improve efficiency as our products evolve.
- Manage waste responsibly. In 2010 we recycled, reused or properly disposed of more than 146 tons of end-of-life products.
- Comply with standards. We follow directives such as Restrictions of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) and Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) 2002/96/EC.
- Expect supplier standards. We adopted the Electronic Industries Citizenship Coalition (EICC) Code of Conduct and encourage our suppliers to do the same. We select world-class partners and strive to achieve supplier diversity.
- Achieve ISO 14001 certification. Tellabs' Finland and Denmark locations meet international standards for environmental management.
We work to reduce our own carbon emissions and energy use, too:
- Reduce emissions. As reported in our Carbon Disclosure Project response, Tellabs reduced overall greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 13% between 2008 and 2010. Our target is to reduce emissions per employee 20% by 2013.
- Reduce energy use. In 2011 we'll make changes based on an energy audit that helped us find ways to reduce consumption.
- Make green choices. The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Finland named Tellabs' Finland location a Green Office for its sustainability. The office began using hydroelectric power in 2010, which helped to reduce our carbon footprint.
