How European operators are getting smarter
European mobile service providers are in a fierce competition. Voice and messaging revenues are down, and the number of new subscribers is slowing. Operators must compete just to keep their current subscribers.
According to Infonetics, mobile broadband is driving network and business model transformation. Mobile data traffic is growing exponentially, but mobile broadband revenue is not growing to the same proportions. Many mobile network operators are becoming victims of their own success. I recently met with a leading operator in EMEA, and they shared with me that 95% of their capital expenses are invested in data--though it only generates only 5% of their profits.
This scenario requires operators to re-think their business models and network strategies.

Can a "hook" monetize network intelligence?
Mobile Internet users have different priorities and expectations for their networks. Teenage users may want social networking, texting and an instant connection. For business users, the priorities are email and a high-quality, reliable network.
Yet, as operators attempt to meet the needs of their customers, they are struggling to further their own profitability. The price elasticity for mobile services is extremely low--one operator can’t charge significantly more for the same service than another. So, network optimization and cost reduction are a critical component of an operator’s strategy. But that’s not enough.

How North American operators are using smart pipe strategies
Mobile network operators are under pressure.
With the rise in smartphones and tablets and huge growth in 3G/4G traffic, operators must use new strategies for network intelligence.

I'm encouraged by the progress we've made with synchronization in the past year.
I have a unique perspective of the synchronization issues that operators, suppliers and vendors around the world are facing. This is mostly thanks to my participation as a member of the International Telecom Sync Forum (ITSF) steering group and contributor to the ITU-T synchronization experts group (Q13).

Operators are racing each other to launch TV Everywhere (TVE) services. But scaling TVE requires a massive investment, and it’s not always clear how operators intend to profit.

Analysts share their thoughts on industry trends
As we replace our 2011 calendars with 2012’s, more and more prediction articles are flooding our inboxes. So, we thought we’d pose a different type of question to some of the leading telecom industry analysts: “What’s the number one thing on service providers’ minds right now?”
The question prompted answers focused on one clear theme: profitability.

Conflict minerals ... where do we start?
Conflict minerals — tungsten, tin, tantalum and gold — are fueling some of the deadliest conflicts since World War II.
Most of these materials come from mines in or near the Democratic Republic of Congo. Armed groups are at war to control profits, worth hundreds of millions of dollars every year.

What kind of intelligence do networks need?
For most operators, bandwidth demands are accelerating faster than they can cost-effectively support. To keep up, operators need to gain more visibility into, and control of, their mobile networks. To get this control and visibility, operators need smarter networks.

What operators have to gain by eliminating dumb pipes
Last month, I gave a talk in London to discuss what operators have to gain by eliminating dumb pipes from their network. I focused on data from a report Tellabs commissioned through STL Partners entitled "The value of 'smart' pipes to mobile network operators."
The overarching conclusion of the study was clear: By following current network strategies, mobile operators are missing an opportunity to double cash returns, and more intelligent networks are key to increasing shareholder value.

Want video anywhere, any time? Adaptive Bit Rate (ABR) Streaming makes it happen
Decades ago, when VCRs became a mass market product, consumers were excited because we could view content previously only available in movie theaters at home. Now, quite the opposite is happening. Consumers are jumping on the TV Everywhere concept. We subscribe to video content at home, and we want to take it with us wherever we go.

Provide value to cloud providers with content delivery networks (CDNs)
In our latest STL Research report, we outlined several moves operators can make to profit from skyrocketing mobile Internet growth. They need to provide more valuable services that others are willing to pay for–which requires a smart network. One specific way operators can deliver value is by building their own Content Delivery Network (CDN) in addition to their mobile network, and charging cloud providers for access.

Asian telcos reap benefits from smart pipes
Mobile markets are saturating and over-the-top (OTT) services are clogging up the network. Our CTO, Dr. Vikram Saksena, recently wrote about how operators can turn to network intelligence to deliver smart services, as a way to double their profits in an era of skyrocketing mobile data growth.

Enable a smooth fiber-based Ethernet backhaul migration
This article was originally published in the Fierce Wireless eBook, Telco Backhaul Strategies.
Most operators' ultimate goal is a fiber-based Ethernet backhaul network. Fiber has virtually unlimited capacity. Plus, compared with TDM or SDH/SONET, Ethernet offers lower costs, greater scalability and flexibility and better support for IP-based applications.
With these benefits, you'd expect operators to rush to implement fiber-based Ethernet backhaul. However, that's not the case.
