Welcome to the Jungle
Some of the best conversation around the water-cooler is about our kids. We joke and brag about them, and often share unilateral grievances. The topic du jour is the mobile phone phenomenon currently sweeping the teen-aged nation. If you have teenagers at home, you KNOW what I'm talking about. Most of the stories are pretty comical, but some have me a bit alarmed. Ok, more than a bit. Read on.

What to Consider as You Secure Broadband Stimulus Funding
The U.S. Federal Broadband Stimulus package provides an incredible opportunity for American communities and telecom equipment vendors alike. We are about to embark on the most beneficial infrastructure upgrade since FDR's New Deal which could greatly enhance the lives of those on the wrong side of the Digital Divide. And those of us in the Telecom industry are chomping at the bit to get to work and make it happen. However, most of the latest Stimulus news has focused on the definitions of broadband and what "unserved" and "underserved" really means. So while we wait for the Federal Government to figure out the details, it's a great time to start looking at broadband solutions.

Mobile Data Proves Recession Proof
Excerpt from Tellabs Inspire Magazine — March 2009.
The first major survey of European and U.S. mobile users conducted during the economic slump gives the telecom industry reason to be optimistic. Consumers intend to dramatically increase use of mobile data services over the next two years, with a significant ramp-up in the next 12 months.

Cutting the Cord
In my last blog, I wrote about my laptop change. I want to step back into that a bit and say that one of the reasons I loved my old laptop was because it was light. I had a laptop break just before a business trip and got a loaner from IT. I lugged this machine around for an entire business trip and thought my arm was going to come out of its socket.

Change is Good
My computer broke recently. The display on my laptop finally gave way after years of service. Giving up this longtime companion was just a bit emotional. I had taken many meetings, given dozens of presentations and read thousands of e-mails with this workhorse. I upgraded its memory and software over the years, but it worked so well that I never felt the need for a shiny, new box. The laptop I had was set up the way I needed and did the jobs I asked it to.
