This instructor-led course provides knowledge and skills needed to understand the basic features of a LAN switch. Participants will be introduced to Ethernet, switching basics, VLANs, and Spanning Tree Protocol. This is a vendor neutral course.

This course includes an optional 20-minute end-of-course knowledge test. Participants opting to take the knowledge test must enroll in the LAN Switching Technology - Knowledge Test (LANSTKT) when enrolling this instructor-led course.

After taking this course, participants should be able to:

  • Discuss Ethernet, transmission types, and frame formats
  • Discuss the components of a LAN switch
  • Discuss the learning and forwarding process
  • Create VLANs
  • Configure Spanning Tree Protocol
Prerequisites: None.
Audience: Participants needing an introduction to Ethernet, switching basics, VLANs, and Spanning Tree Protocol.

2. Switching Basics

  • What is switching
  • Frames and Packets
  • Collision domains and CSMA/CD
  • A hub and a switch
  • CAM table
  • ARP
  • Frame transmission process

3. VLANs

  • The boundaries of a broadcast domain
  • What is VLAN
  • Frame tagging

4. Spanning Tree Protocol

  • The need of Spanning Tree Protocol (STP)
  • STP convergence process
  • STP timers and states
  • STP and Rapid STP (RSTP)

Class Specifics

Duration: One day
On-site classes available (Minimum of six students is required)
Lecture-based, no hands-on lab activities
Class size: minimum six to a maximum of 12 students
