This web-based course will familiarize participants with Tellabs 5500 system architecture, specifically the hardware, backplane, and cabling requirements for the Port Complex. It has been updated to include FP10.1 information.

After taking this course the participants should be able to:

  • Describe the different pieces of common equipment on the Tellabs 5500
  • Identify the purpose of the DS1/1 Port Interface Equipment
  • Identify the purpose of the DD DS1 Port Interface Equipment
  • Identify the purpose of the DS3 Port Interface Equipment
  • Identify the purpose of the STS-1E Port Interface Equipment
  • Identify the purpose of the OC-3 & OC-12 Optical Port Interface Equipment

This course includes an end-of-course knowledge test.

Prerequisites: Students must have a working knowledge of:
  • Basic telephony
  • Voice and data communications
  • Basic SONET concepts
  • Basic T1 and T3 concepts
Audience: This course is designed for anyone who requires a basic understanding of the Tellabs 5500 system architecture – Port Complex. It is also designed for technicians, administrators, and/or network managers responsible for maintaining, managing, or provisioning a Tellabs 5500 system.

  • Time Slot Interchange (TSI) Module

2. DS1/1 Port Interface Equipment

  • DS1 Port Module
  • DS1 Line Interface Modules (LIMs)
  • DS1 Backplane

3. DD DS1 Port Interface Equipment

  • DD DS1 Port Module
  • DD DS1 Line Interface Modules (LIM)
  • DD DS1 Backplane

4. DS3 Port Interface Equipment

  • DS3 Port Module
  • DS3 Line Interface Modules (LIM3)
  • DS3 Backplane

5. STS-1E Port Interface Equipment

  • STS-1E Port Module
  • STS-1E Line Interface Modules
  • STS-1E Backplane

6. OC-3 and OC-12 Optical Port Interface Equipment

  • Triple Mapping Module (MM3)
  • OC-3 and OC-12 Optical Port Module
  • OC-3 and OC-12 Backplane
  • Date Communication Channel (DCC)/Data Processor Module (DPM)
