LaGuardia Airport and Passive Optical LAN

As our nation adapts with the changes of COVID-19, it appears that many folks may not be traveling anytime soon. Yet, I wanted to share some great news about the grand opening of the new LaGuardia Airport Terminal B Arrivals and Departures Hall “Headhouse” that was built leveraging Tellabs Optical LAN (OLAN) solution.

This airport upgrade is part of the larger $8 billion total rebuilding of LaGuardia Airport, which essentially constructed a whole new unified airport while maintaining daily airport operations. The new 4-story 850,000 square foot Headhouse features an open architecture with 60-foot ceilings and towering windows that provide ample natural lighting. The Headhouse is the central entry point for travelers flying out of Terminal B. It provides efficient access to all passenger concourses, gates, parking garages, and acts as the central connection to Terminal C as well. This healthy and sustainable LEED Silver certified facility includes ground transportation, baggage claim, check-in, baggage drop-off, retail shops, restaurants and other traveler amenities.

All of these vital airport resources are connected using our highly reliable fiber-based Passive Optical LAN technology. The high-performance Tellabs Optical LAN extends network connectivity for Wi-Fi, kiosks, security (including IP security cameras), paging (IP digital audio), parking systems, ticketing, gate operations and baggage handling over a future-proof fiber infrastructure. LaGuardia Airport has long recognized Optical LAN as a better way to build and operate networks because it:

  • Speeds IT productivity with simplification
  • Reduces network security vulnerability points
  • Offers more network design flexibility with industry leading capacity and density

I spoke with our partner, Converge One, and they said all went very smoothly during the grand opening last weekend, including test and turn-up of the Tellabs’ Optical LAN system. I’m looking forward to continued success at LaGuardia Airport as the Optical LAN solution is the cornerstone of the airports’ world-class traveler experience and streamlined airport operation.

I’d also like to recognize HOK, who is another strong partner of Tellabs. HOK deserves a great deal of credit for designing this contemporary airport terminal that delivers superior passenger experience and an amazing exterior architectural aesthetics worthy of New York City and the worlds’ finest.
