Broadband Ethernet

The best choice in the telco access networking industry for Ethernet transport and service without sacrificing service provider revenues generated from traditional copper-based services.

Ideal connectivity for business services and mobile backhaul

Open, Healthy and Productive Office

Deploying contemporary Ethernet-centric services from a service provider’s embedded base of access equipment is challenging enough, but the fact is that modernizing a traditional digital loop carrier system to support fiber-based and Ethernet connectivity, without cannibalizing existing revenue from copper-based legacy services, is nearly impossible. What service providers need is a fiber-fed digital loop carrier system that supports a wide variety of service, transport and network connectivity, including copper, optical, Ethernet, SONET and even ATM.

Tellabs Broadband products support Ethernet transport and service end-to-end, including Ethernet to the core, Ethernet within the system and Ethernet service drops. The product portfolio includes 10Gbps and 1Gbps Ethernet interfaces toward the core network, across interterminal transport and an option for 10/100 Ethernet drops to end users. The transport interfaces, both Tellabs GbE226 and Tellabs GbE222, are ideal for high-capacity applications or for use in interfacing with embedded Ethernet equipment. Tellabs’ 10/100 Ethernet interfaces provide ideal support for business customers and mobile backhaul. The Tellabs 1000 MSAP can support these Ethernet interfaces simultaneously as it supports legacy analog services. Thus, the Tellabs 1000 MSAP is unique in that it can support these next-generation IP/Ethernet initiatives without sacrificing traditional TDM revenue sources.

Ethernet connectivity choices

The Tellabs 10 Gigabit Ethernet 226 (GbE226) plug-in card allows our service providers to maximize their embedded base of Tellabs 1000 MSAP systems and accelerate their service delivery capacity, while minimizing fiber uplink impact. The Tellabs GbE226 card provides Four (4) 1Gbps Ethernet ports small form-factor pluggable (SFP) and Two (2) 1Gbps / 10Gbps Ethernet ports enhanced small form-factor pluggable (SFP+) – thus a total of six (6) Ethernet ports with flexible uplink and tributary connectivity options for existing Tellabs 1000 MSAP systems.

The Gigabit Ethernet 222 (GbE222) card enables the Tellabs 1000 MSAP system to evolve with networks moving from circuit switched/connection-based to packet/connectionless-based. The GbE222 transceiver supports packet-based Ethernet services in a Tellabs 1000 CBA in these modes for Ethernet uplink to the service provider’s network and interterminal transport. The GbE222 provides two (2) Gigabit Ethernet ports equipped with optional configurations of 1000-Base-SX Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP) and 1000-Base-LX SFP optics.

The Ethernet Service 10/100 (ES10/100) plug-in card enables Ethernet service to be delivered directly to subscribers from any shelf. Each ES10/100 provides up to 100 Mbps of bidirectional traffic per port. Each card provides two independent ports. The GbE226 and GbE222 uplink cards can be used to support cross-connects (Ethernet-to-Ethernet connections, or EECs) with this card.

High-Availability Ethernet

Redundancy is supported with the Tellabs Ethernet plug-in cards and the implementation of Link Aggregation (IEEE 802.3ad LAG) at both card level and per port level. This provides resilient connectivity across central office, remote cabinets and customer premises.

End-to-end Ethernet

With the Tellabs ES 10/100 used in conjunction with the Tellabs GbE226 (10G+1G) and the Tellabs GbE222 (1G) plug-in cards, in transport and network uplink configurations, the Tellabs 1000 MSAP can deliver end-to-end Ethernet interfaces. Even better, these Ethernet-based interfaces can be deployed without abandoning revenue-generating legacy Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) and Special Services that are delivered simultaneously from within the same Tellabs 1000 MSAP shelf.

Ethernet, ATM and TDM Interworking

Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), TDM and Ethernet interworking is achieved with ATM-to-Ethernet Connection (AEC), Ethernet-to-Ethernet Connection (EEC) and Ethernet-to-ATM Connection (EAC) supported across the Tellabs 1000 MSAP system.

This rare combination of both analog, digital, copper and fiber connectivity provides network operators with economical access network modernization.
