Tellabs Optical LAN converts network space to learning purposes for new high school

Tellabs and System Tech deliver an Idaho high school a new network design that allows K-12 schools to repurpose space, normally occupied by equipment, for teacher and student usage.

Dallas, Texas. March 28, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) – Tellabs, the leading provider of Passive Optical LAN (POL) solutions, and System Tech, a special systems solutions integrator, installed a Passive Optical Local Area Network (LAN) at a modern high school in Idaho that reduces the square footage monopolized by telecommunications rooms, thus allowing the high school, and adjacent middle school, to utilize the former network equipment room foot print for educational needs (view the video case study).

Located in south eastern Idaho, this 257,000 square foot contemporary high school facility spread-out across a sprawling 55-acres, installed a Passive Optical LAN (OLAN) system that extends the reach of Ethernet and Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity from 100 meters (over copper cabling) to 20 kilometers (over fiber cabling). Not only does the OLAN design reduce the physical impact on communications rooms, and cable pathways at the high school, but the extended network connectivity also provided the school district the capability of serving an adjacent middle school with the same system – ultimately improving operational efficiencies across two schools.

System Tech, an integrator of network solutions, security, surveillance, structured cabling and life safety systems, worked closely with the school district personnel to design this Optical LAN infrastructure to achieve these four (4) goals for the district staff, teacher faculty and students:

  • Reduced network foot print at the high school and other district schools connected in the future
  • Provide a more reliable and stable IT infrastructure that is critical to learning experience
  • Assure a graceful path forward to unlimited network speeds and increased connectivity
  • Build a simplified network that is easy to manage and delivers on-going operational efficiencies

The outcome at this high school is very similar to what we’ve seen at our other K-12 schools that install Passive Optical LAN. They lower their year-over-year network operational costs because of the reduced electronics, and streamlined management, and then they can shift that money savings into teacher and student needs,” said Jim Norrod, Tellabs President and CEO.

It’s a different way to holistically look at a school network needs across an entire school district. The Optical LAN system gives our K-12 customers a solution that meets their unique needs, allowing them to provide the high speed, reliable network that students and staff need while planning for the future with limited resources,” said Dave Lawes, RCDD PMP, System Tech Account Manager.
