Indian Head Casino gains an IT network with better security, improved reliability and is easier to operate with OLAN

Tellabs and ITConnect establish Warm Springs Tribes as regional IT technology leaders with a more secure, simple and dependable Passive Optical LAN at their casino and travel plaza.

Dallas, Texas. Nov. 27, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) – Tellabs, the leading provider of Passive Optical LAN (POL) solutions, and ITConnect, a premier network integrator, installed a Passive Optical Local Area Network (LAN) at Indian Head Casino and Plateau Travel Plaza firmly positioning the Warm Springs Tribes at the forefront of fiber optic technology for their IT network.

Located in Central Oregon, the Indian Head Casino is a modern 40,000-square foot building housing 500 slot machines, blackjack tables and a top-notch restaurant. The contemporary Plateau Travel Plaza includes parking for up to 70 trucks, laundry facilities, fueling service, a 3,000-square foot convenience store, home style seated dining and 30 slot machines at the indoor casino.

ITConnect, a qualified network integrator of casino gaming and casino surveillance, worked with Indian Head Casino IT staff to research the differences between traditional switch-based copper LAN and the more progressive Tellabs® Optical LAN (OLAN). After a thorough investigation, all parties agreed with confidence to move forward at both Indian Head Casino and Plateau Travel Plaza with the OLAN design based on these four (4) unique differentiators:

  • Smaller footprint in the main data center, telecom closets and cabling pathways
  • Better security with a reduction in points of network vulnerability and less human touch
  • Improved reliability with redundancy at the main data center equipment and fiber route diversity
  • Ease of operations due to OLAN’s centralized intelligence and management

With the OLAN design, we were able to reduce the number of switches our team managed, by 60 to 70%, which was big help for us,” said James Welden, Systems Administrator at Indian Head Casino. “Managing and troubleshooting the old-style networks was a nightmare and not user friendly at all. Our experience with our new Optical LAN is that it is less complicated, and more secure, to manage a whole IP network with a few IP addresses versus the many IP addresses we managed with our former legacy switched network.

Tellabs is very pleased to help the Warm Springs Tribes achieve their goal of being a regional IT technology leader with our Passive Optical LAN installation at Indian Head Casino and Plateau Travel Plaza,” said Jim Norrod, Tellabs President and CEO. “It’s great to see how OLAN’s small form-factor, simplified design, better security, improved reliability and ease of operations has delivered many advantages for their IT staff, their customers and the surrounding community they serve. This comes as a direct result of Tellabs’ ongoing effort to replicate this success with many other tribal nations across the country.

The amount of network uptime required for this installation, with the simplicity of managing the system presented, ITConnect with the opportunity to showcase the Tellabs’ Type-B PON protection alongside the enhanced features of Tellabs Panorama PON Manager.  This allowed for virtually no downtime including during maintenance periods.” said Brian E. Hardy, Executive Vice President of ITConnect. “For the Casino and Travel Plaza just finding a maintenance window without lost revenue is a challenge, with Type-B PON protection, this was undeniably the best solution as it guaranteed network uptime.
