Gartner Research says that Optical LAN is good for new builds (greenfield), but they stop short in endorsing renovation (brownfield). It seems that there is a false belief that if the last 300 feet of copper cables are not touched during a renovation, it’s easier to just refresh the traditional closet-based Ethernet switch. It is also wrongly assumed that the current form-factor of ONTs don’t match workgroup switch footprint, plus introducing a new technology, like Optical LAN, makes it difficult to for the IT staff to manage two LAN technologies. All this leads to a bigger problem that by not leveraging Optical LAN for brownfield projects, there is a perpetual blocking of the adoption of this better contemporary fiber-based enterprise network design. Making matters worse is the status quo architecture means enterprise networks are growing evermore complex, burdened by increasing costs and known security gaps.

The truth is that since Optical LAN is accepted as the better network design for new builds, then OLAN is definitely the best choice for renovation and refresh projects too. So, how can OLAN continue to accelerate growth in new builds, AND include renovation projects as well?

The answer is the new rank mountable Tellabs FlexSym ONT248. The ONT248 is a 10G XGS-PON fed ONT equipped with 48-ports of Ethernet with PoE, so you can now complete cost effective one-for-one closet-switch replacement, and gain future-ready fiber-based IT infrastructure you desire, and:

  • Lower IT support and maintenance costs
  • Remove points of known network vulnerabilities
  • Reduce fiber cabling building-to-building and floor-to-floor
  • Gain extended temperature range inside IT equipment rooms
  • Support IoT, smart buildings, Wi-Fi, digital ceiling and LED lighting
  • Migrate to deep fiber design or combining with deep fiber
  • Right size 2.5G PON (ONT729GP) along with 10G PON (ONT248).
