Perimeter Security with IP Camera Surveillance Using Optical LAN

Perimeter security can be difficult when dealing with large areas and extended distances. One of the better means of deterring intruder access is with an IP camera surveillance network. However, the traditional design of legacy switch network is burdened with huge amounts of cable and electronics required to operate 4K HD cameras over an extended range. With such demanding design criteria and environmental challenges, these perimeter security projects more often than not experience high equipment and cabling costs.

Tellabs Optical LAN (or OLAN) is a better way to build and operate perimeter security IP camera surveillance networks. Based on both G-PON, symmetrical 10G XGS-PON with bi-directions AES128 encryption, and advanced IP/Ethernet network access controls, OLAN is the best choice for these sprawling outdoor networks for the following reasons:

  • Fiber cabling provides greatest bandwidth today and into the future
  • OLAN extends Ethernet connectivity 300x further distance than copper networks
  • Thousands of points of vulnerability can be eliminated with an OLAN design
  • OLAN can lower both CapEx expense and significant year-over-year OpEx costs

The Tellabs OLAN solutions offers purpose built Optical Line Terminals (OLT), Optical Network Terminals (ONT) and environmentally hardened enclosures for perimeter security IP camera surveillance networks, including:

Enclosure – Tellabs is currently working with an enclosure for outdoor applications that is capable of an extended temperature range (–10C/14F to +50C/122F). This enclosure allows the IP camera to be near the ONT for an economical solution for outdoor IP camera surveillance networks.

ONT202 – The Tellabs FlexSym ONT202 is specifically engineered to address the modern Wi-Fi and IP camera applications. The ONT202 has two multi-rate Ethernet ports (one 10G / 5G / 2.5G / and 1000BT, and one 2.5G and 1000BT) while both ports can deliver IEEE 802.3bt PoE power with up to 90 watts (140W of PoE power total for the ONT). The ONT202 high power PoE is also important when powering camera heaters and cameras with Pan Tilt Zoom (PTZ). Additionally, this 10G XGS-PON ONT202 industrial temperature range (-40C to +55C) makes it well suited for outdoor IP surveillance camera support where higher resolution cameras such as HD and 4K monopolize bandwidth.

OLT-mini – The Tellabs FlexSym OLT-mini provides a small form-factor OLT supporting either GPON or symmetrical 10 gigabit XGS-PON. The Tellabs FlexSym OLT-mini weathertight case, passive cooling and extended temperature range means that it is ideal for both indoor and outdoor connectivity. All of these features optimize the OLT-mini for perimeter security IP camera surveillance networks, transportation (e.g. air, rail, road, warehousing), manufacturing (e.g. food & beverage, heavy industry), utilities (electric, gas, water) and natural resource industries as it solves their difficult connectivity challenges of sprawling distances, harsh environments and extended temperature ranges.

Recently Tellabs Optical LAN was selected as the architecture of choice for a border surveillance project. The project spanned a 30-mile distance over a Passive Optical Network with remote powering extending the Ethernet and PoE connectivity over 1,600 feet to the cameras. The contractor reports that the OLAN design dramatically reduced the amount of fiber cable and labor needed for installation, including less equipment enclosures required and electricity to operate. OLAN also offered considerably longer MTBF for equipment compared to traditional switches. Better yet, the OLAN is much simpler to operate with fewer software upgrades planned or needed – plus its near future proof design using fiber cabling protects the investment for years if not decades to come. When the numbers were all added up, the Tellabs OLAN dramatic savings for this perimeter security IP camera surveillance network.
